Typepad's answer to comment spam

Neil Turner asks the Lazyweb,

Paul Lindner at the Everything TypePad blog has posted how TypePad has tackled the problem of comment spam. As far is I can tell, when you post a message to a TypePad blog, TypePad checks your machine to see if it is running an open proxy server. If you aren’t, your comment is posted as normal, otherwise you get an error. Apparently, this blocked 20 000 spam comments on the first day of implementation alone.

Hum… I don’t really see a request in this post but I’m still replying. Yesterday, I discovered my server was configured as an open proxy, at least according to slashdot. It wasn’t the first time slashdot complained, but I gave up at first, thinking it was a problem on their end (I generally assume my end is ok). Yesterday I took a few minutes to check it out, and found I had messed with my apache config to play with zope and moinmoin a while back. To make a long story short, I fixed my problem and now I can post to slashdot again :)

Great information here. Just what I needed to complete my essay. Thanks. In my opinion the internet is the key to success!
