Audio RSS Reader?

asks the Lazyweb,

I want a program to download a list of RSS feeds, record an mp3 of it reading the new entries from each one, and transfer it to my iPod, each morning before I leave for work.

http://www.kainjow.com/pod2go/website/ may meet the needs you’re looking for; it seems to support arbitrary RSS feeds.

pod2go is close, but it just transfers the text of the RSS feeds to the iPod, it doesn’t do any speech synthesis.

what about this: voicebox

converts text to speech, and can download rss newsfeeds.

Not sure if it will directly transfer to iPod, but if it doesn’t the site claims that it’s fully AppleScript-able, so it shouldn’t be too hard to either create a script of your own to do it, or else find one that comes close and modify it.

heck, pair this with a cron entry and you could have it download and convert, and then have a cron entry that transfers it all over to the iPod five minutes before you leave for work ;)

(thanks to Forward Address: OS X for the tip)

That looks like exactly what I want!

The iPod bit was just icing, really, and yes, it can all be done with AppleScript. Very nice.

Thanks, LazyWeb!

Great idea!

How about for PC users… Does anyone know of an RSS newreader that will output to voice mp3? Preferably using one of the awesome new AT&T Labs Natural Voice voices?

Any blogs hosted at blogthing.com will now have this functionality. An mp3 is generated of the latest postings. It’s an amusing distraction. Read about it on the dev site.

I guess we had an idea others have already had here, but we’ve got this working - it is pretty cool. Look for a release of the script this Tuesday.
